What is APAI?
The Asphalt Pavement Association of Indiana (APAI) is a statewide
trade association established in 1959. Its' members are the leading asphalt pavement
producer contractors in the state. Most of the companies comprising the industry are
Indiana based, closely held family corporations.
The Asphalt Pavement Association of Indiana has a long and proud
history of seeking and implementing technological advancements to improve the performance
of HMA pavements. The primary users of asphalt pavements are state and local governments.
The association works in partnership with the Indiana Department of
Transportation (INDOT) in the development of specifications and procedures that lend to
incorporating emerging technologies which provide improved performing highways. The
industry is constantly evaluating new processes to seek improvements.
Over the past few years emerging technologies have required that
contractors have technicians with the capabilities of developing and evaluating mixtures
for their intended applications. Training programs to certify personnel are conducted at
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
Recognizing the future will demand even more proficient personnel,
the Association awards annual scholarships at the Civil Engineering Schools in Indiana.
The Association awarded scholarships to students at Purdue University,
Rose-Hulman Institute and Tri-State University for the 2006-07 school year.
In the area of education, the association in partnership with INDOT
and the Federal Highway Administration developed the model curriculum for Civil
Engineering courses at Universities in Indiana . This program has been so well received
that it has been reproduced by FHWA and distributed to every school of civil engineering
in the United States.
The Association conducts workshops and seminars for members,
designers and users of asphalt pavement.
